The Age of Aang:
With the help of Firelord Zuko and Water Chief Katara, Avatar Aang brought an age of unprecedented peace and prosperity to the world. Often referred to by the Fire Nation as the Golden Age or the Age of Penance, this time was marked with compassion and international cooperation.
The Earth Kingdom and Southern water tribes began rebuilding with the help of the nation that had decimated them. There were of course those who resisted the new regime of the Fire Nation (both in its citizens and former enemies); most of these were dealt with quickly by the council of the White Lotus, who for the first time in their history publicly announced their existence.
The Earth King returned to Ba-Sing-Se after traveling the world and began a reform of the cities government.
Of Note:
a) The first Ocean tribe was founded by Katara, it was said to have been a giant iceberg at the time, always moving around the world and often spotted on the horizon before the appearance of the Avatar. The Ocean Tribe is now a chain of Islands in the middle of the ocean between the land of the Western Air temple and the Earth Kingdom. The floating island has since disappeared into myth and legend.
b) Toward the end of the Age of Aang, a group of Air-Nomads appeared at the Northern Air Temple led by one Monk Tao. It is rumored that Avatar Aang spent a great deal of time in secret, passing on the philosophy of his people and the art of Airbending to many people around the world. It is not clear from any written record if his students became the new Air-Nomads, but it is the general opinion of historians that this was the case.
The Age of Kia/Korra (because we don't really have any info on her we are pretty much free-balling what happened lol):
Firelord Zuko lived a very long time outliving even the Avatar. When he finally died a coup was staged and to overthrow the dynasty before his daughter Iroel could be crowned and was thwarted by Avatar Kia/Korra. In the process Kia/Korra fell in love with Iroel who ultimately gave up the throne to her cousin Sorra the Sky Dragon in order to be with the Avatar.
The Ba-Sing-Se reform was short lived and after the death of the Earth King it reverted to its old politics. The new Earth Queen masked her greed and cruelty behind a veil of generosity to other nations, but within the borders of her city she enacted legislation which oppressed the lower class even further until much of the once great city became sectioned off slums for the working class. She enacted heavy taxes and incarcerated those who could not pay them in a great prison built from the ruins beneath. By the end of the Age of Kia/Korra Omashu cut off its ties with Ba-Sing-Se completely.
The Earth Queen used the dissonance with Omashu to her advantage. Claiming the need for a high security fortress to be commissioned, one which could protect against attacks from enemy earth benders. In the end the fortress was revealed be a prison made of metal where she put any citizen who opposed her harsh rule.
The Southern Tribe regained its former grandeur and excelled in trade especially with its sister tribe in the north. The formation of the Ocean Tribe is often attributed to the high frequency of travel between the north and South Pole, and the desire to for safer and more efficient trade between the two. Many shippers and traders of both tribes became the first settlers on the Island chain which became the homeland of the Ocean Tribe.
The Air Nomads prospered and spread, renovating the Western Air Temple and re-establishing their tradition of familiar separation as well as the Air Council. It is said they also began a Sky-Bison breeding program to save the near extinct species at this time.
Of Note:
Kia/Korra spent much of her later years helping to establish the Ocean Tribe Islands, it is even said that she raised some of the Islands from the ocean floor in order to complete the chain.
Eventually she retired with Iroel to Ember Island where she was said to have been a great supporter of the arts.
The Age of Rin Numa
The Earth Avatar Rin Numa was said to have been a great spiritual guide, and spent much of his time traversing between our world and the spirit world.
This age was marked by massive industrial improvements and technological advancements from the Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and of all places, the Northern Air Temple.
The Air Nomads repopulated and rebuilt the Southern and Eastern Temples at over the course of 100 years.
The Northern Water Tribe was devastated by a strange plague which killed off many of their animals and people, causing many to flee to the Ocean Southern and even Swamp Tribes.
Ba-Sing-Se continued in the vein of their past Queens Rule, though controlled now by a parliament of commerce. Toward the end of this age a great revolt was staged in the cities slums, causing the city to attempt to imprison nearly 20% of its population. The end result was a downfall of the Ba-Sing-Se economy, an overthrow of the current government and the defection of a group of prisoners who escaped via mysterious means from the highest security prison.
Of Note:
It is said that at this time the first dragons to be seen in over 300 years and thought to be extinct were spotted flying high above the Fire Nation Capitol.
Age of Jie' L'ong
As the Northern tribe began to recover with only a fraction of its population intact, the Southern Tribe expanded and erected two new cities in the South Pole, Nunalikpok-Umiak (shore of boats) to the west which specialized in fishing and trading, and Ananna-Uimaitok (place of calm beauty) to the inland which some call the City-Temple.
During this Age the Air Nomads are said to have descended from their temples in great numbers. They offered aid to many parts of the world, they began ferreting supplies to the Isolated Northern Tribe (and apparently helped developed a popular new game called "Ice Ball" while they were there) and brought council to the crumbling city of Ba-Sing-Se.
This lasted a span of about twenty years then without warning the nomads disappeared as quickly as they had come retreating most of their numbers to the four temples while the rest resumed their nomadic individual travel.
Avatar Jie' L'ong of the Fire Nation finished her training the same year as the Air Nomads retreat and went on to finally re-established the order of the Sages. She was also the first Person to be seen riding a Dragon since the ancient war.
With the council of the Air Nomads and economic assistance from re-established diplomatic ties with Omashu, the City of Ba-Sing Se began to recover. To the south rumors of a small military overthrowing or occupying towns began to spread but were largely ignored in the midst of Ba-Sing-Se's reconstruction.
The Age of Arui (Avatar Rune)
This age was short-lived, Avatar Arui (also known by some as Avatar Rune for his propensity toward studying ancient writings and hieroglyphs), but by far the most tumultuous since that of Avatar Aang.
When Avatar Arui finished his training he began studying ancient runes in the earth Kingdom. At this time a small and very poor village where Gao-Li now stands disappeared, its buildings and people vanishing overnight.
The world was experiencing a great deal of prosperity, aside from attacks on some southern earth kingdom villages which were assumed to be the work of disorganized bandits, much of the world was enjoying the fruit of long toil toward peace and international harmony.
Under this new political light, leaders the four nations met in a worldwide council and decided to establish a city of diplomacy, international trade, one which would be governed by embassies of all the nations.
Avatar Rune was summoned to the new location, the City of Gao-Li, built on the site of the once poor village. It was located equally between the four nations along the western border of the earth Kingdom.
This city prospered for a time, but it was not long lived. The raiders of the earth kingdom cities finally revealed themselves as the new-found Metal Empire. Through sabotage and eventually outright war they took the city of Gao-Li as a trophy of their nation might.
The war which ensued was devastating, the Avatar and the Air Council was betrayed by one of their own who would opposed the joining of the nations. The people of Gao-Li who did not escape were enslaved or slaughtered; the Metal Empire immediately began to claim surrounding villages and farms for its own.
Finally a small group of refuges sheltering themselves in the nearby Water Colony banded together for a final strike to reclaim the city and liberate its prisoners. Led by the young Water Chief and the return of Avatar Rune, a ferocious battle was waged, by the end of the third day few were left standing on either side.
Avatar Rune, horrified by the devastation and loss of life, used the knowledge he had gained in his studies in conjunction with the wisdom and experience of his past lives.
Through the Avatar State, Arui healed the most critical wounds, bringing those affected back from the brink of death. He then bent the energy of those on both sides of the conflict, and created the first Archons, those who bridge two elements and stand between the nations, ensuring that there would always be those who could rise above allegiance for the sake of peace.
The strain was too much for the Avatar and death took him soon after. The City of Goa Li was liberated and Archons of both sides came arranged a truce with the Metal Empire.
Age of the Archon
The current age where the Archon have been created. Fractions of the Avatar spirit turned them into something different, allowing the ability to manipulate two non-opposing elements. The problem is that it is believe this fractured the Avatar Spirit getting rid of the Avatar forever. The Archons have since been unseen, unknown by the masses.
